Q. I have the poweramp app. I want to adjust the eq settings to make it sound quality sound better. I know it has presets, which I use, but I want the music quality to sound like my ipod.
My question is how to use the equalizer. I know the different numbers represent the frequencies. But do the different numbers adjust the snare, bass, treble voice,etc?
Im used to having the beat SLIGHTLY drowning out the voice.

A. There are two ways to approach a graphic equalizer (which is what you have in the app).
The "scientific" way is to learn what instruments occupy the different frequencies. For example, a snare drum's fundamental sound is about 200Hz to 500Hz, and the snares show up between 1.5kHz to 4kHz.
A male voice is about 200 Hz to 3kHz. And so on and so forth. Then, you can approach the EQ with the knowledge of what you're affecting when you touch make an adjustment.
The thing to remember is that each slider (correctly called a "band") doesn't just affect one instrument...it affects all of the sound in that band.
Another thing, graphic EQs can add or subtract energy in each band. Push it up, you're adding. Pull it down...subtracting. Leave it in the middle...the sound is unaffected.
That's the scientific way. The easy way...just start pushing the sliders around and see what they do!! As long as you're listening at a reasonable volume you're not going to hurt anything.
It's not possible to give you specific settings, because we don't know what headphones you're using, the specific songs (and it will change song to song), or your hearing. You have to do this yourself.
I can tell you this...in general if you pull down the 500 and 1kHz sliders a bit, you'll usually reduce the vocals. With EQ's, it's always better to cut and not boost.

why is it sometimes better to use preamps/poweramps instead of amp heads?
Q. i've been checking out bass player rigs on guitargeek.com, and i noticed that most of them just use preamps and poweramps and no amp heads... are they better than amp heads?
A. The head is a power/preamp built together, so there is no real difference. It allows for more customization, and they are usually built to run on higher voltages. And they are easier to lug around separately. Most people mic their amps these days anyways
